Fine/Reserve Tawny
Tawny is barrel-aged port wine. Regular Tawny without an age designation is often referred to as "false Tawny," but that does not mean it is not approved as port wine. It is approved on the same level as true Tawny wines with age designations, but it is often of a slightly lower quality. Read more at the bottom of the page.

Tawny Port Wine
Tawny is a blend of relatively young wines, often averaging between 7 and 10 years. It can be a mixture of very young port wines, which are still red, lighter port wines with some barrel aging, or white port wine made from green grapes. With a blend of multiple vintages, the producer has the opportunity to design the wine according to the desired style.
Tawny is divided into Fine Tawny and the slightly higher quality Tawny Reserva.
Tawny Port Wine as a Meal Companion
Tawny has a brownish color due to barrel aging, but it often has reddish nuances because the wines in the blend are not old enough for the color to fully change to a brown tone. These wines can pair well with light and salty cheeses and less sweet desserts. Tawny is a great choice for everyday wines, as they are not too heavy or overpowering.

What is a Tawny?
Tawny is a barrel-aged port wine, aged for a minimum of 3 years. It is typically a blend of port wines with different age profiles. Colheita comes from a single vintage. Tawny is available as Tawny Reserva, Fine Tawny, 10-year, 20-year, 30-year, 40-year, 50-year, and Colheita. In aging, port wine loses its color pigments and becomes more golden-brown in color. Tawny is sweeter than most other port wines.
What is Tawny Reserve?
When a Tawny is categorized as a Reserve, it means that it has aged for 6-8 years in barrels and is made from higher-quality grapes. This results in greater complexity and more pronounced oak notes than a traditional Fine Tawny. However, Tawny Reserve can still vary greatly in taste, depending on how each house makes its version.
What is sweeter – Tawny or Ruby?
Tawny is sweeter than Ruby. Tawny has a more caramelized sweetness, with notes of dried fruits, roasted nuts, spices, and freshly ground coffee beans. Ruby port, on the other hand, has more notes of cherries, red currants, black currants, cranberries, and other red berries and fruits, giving it a fruitier and fresher taste compared to the more elegant and refined flavor of Tawny.
